Le rubis est la variété rouge du minéral nommé corindon, coloré par l'élément du chrome. Toutes les autres couleurs de ce minéral sont en fait des saphirs, ce qui signifie que la couleur est la clé de cette pierre précieuse royale.

D'ailleurs, le nom « rubis » vient de rubeus, le mot latin pour rouge. En sanskrit ancien, rubis se traduisait par ratnaraj, qui signifiait « roi des pierres précieuses ».
